HumphreyLine’s biodegradable cups/flyers/bottles are made of our normal polyethylene resin, but we add a very small amount of additive at the molding stage, when the plastic is a highly viscous fluid. The additive, which is FDA food-contact safe and Prop 65 compliant, sits dormant in the cup during normal use. You can use it over and over, run it through the dishwasher, leave it on the window ledge in full sun, and nothing happens. Once the cup goes into the waste stream, and arrives in the landfill, the microbes which occur naturally in soil, will activate the additive. Over a period of two to three years, depending on soil conditions, the polyethylene molecule breaks down into water and carbon dioxide, which is where hydrocarbons come from in the first place.
